As well as teaching children to 'decode' we use high quality texts to teach children how to comprehend what they have read. The staff at Madron Daniel do this through whole class sessions, using skills called Reading VIPERS - this is an acronym for six different reading skills.
The teachers expose the children to high quality stimuli to teach the skills and then they use recommended, or topic related, texts for the children to apply their skills.
This is great for ensuring that children discover new authors and new text types, as well as improving their understanding of what is read.
